The Prejean Family
of
L'Ardoise, Cape Breton

 by Mary [Sampson] LeBlanc

Many thanks to Ron Frazier, John Poirier and Margaret Preshong and Stephen White all contritubted to the material posted.

The Préjean (Preshong) family of L’Ardoise, Richmond County, Nova Scotia, originates from Louis Préjean, who arrived in L’Ardoise in the late 1820's. He was born about 1801/02, in France, and died on 21Dec. 1832, in L’Ardoise.
According to Stephen White, of the Center of D’Etudes Acadiennes, at the University of Moncton, New
Brunswick: "Louis Préjean was a native of Brest, Brittany, France. He married Anne SAMPSON, daughter of Jean SAMPSON and Anne BOUDROT."

According to tradition, Louis Préjean was a sailor, who jumped ship at New Orleans, (Notes of Rameau de Saint-Pére). Louis married Anne "Nannon" Sampson (1813-1884) about 1829. Louis died young at the age of 32, but he left behind three sons, who grew to manhood, Ephrem, Louis and Isaie "Isaac". From these offspring, we have the countless descendants of Louis and Anne in Cape Breton, in Canada, and in the United States.

Many questions are raised by the information about Louis presented by Stephen White, like, "How did Louis make his way from New Orleans to L’Ardoise?" "Why did he jump ship? "and " Why did he choose to settle in L’Ardoise?" This is a very interesting family, with many questions about its founder left unanswered, for the moment, but what we can present is the heritage of that "renegade sailor", and we do that with pride and pleasure. We salute you, great, great, great grandfather Préjean, your grandchildren....
