Lower L'Ardoise- Mrs. Gertrude Westlake, 72 Widow of James westlake, died
suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Raney, in Lower L'Ardoise,
Cape Breton. Born in Halifax the former Gertrude Nord__, She made her home
in L'Ardoise for more than 50 years. Since the death of her husband three
years ago, Mrs. Westlake had lived with her daughter Nora (Mrs. N. Playter),
Dartmouth. She was on a visit to L'Ardoise when she died. Mrs. Westlake
was a member of the Church of the Guardian Angel, Lower L'Ardoise, and
belonged to the Catholic Women's League. She was a past member of the
Ladies Auxiliary of the Canadian Legion Branch 110. She is survived by
four sons. Charles, Liverpool. Gordon, Kingston, Ont.; Harold, Lower
L'Ardoise; and Clarence, Dartmouth; four daughters, Florence (Mrs. John
Raney), Lower L'Ardoise; Nora (Mrs. N. Playter) Dartmouth; Agnes (Mrs.
Parker MacPhail), Shearwater; and Theresa (Mrs. Donald Blackmore),
Dartmouth; one brother Walter, of Halifax and three sisters. Mrs. Mamie
Gracie, Lower L'Ardoise; Mrs. Ruth Ashworth and Mrs. Annie Moore, both of
Montreal. 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased
by her husband, two sons in infancy, one brother and two sisters. Remains
are resting at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. John Raney, Lower L'Ardoise. Funeral services will be held
in time for 9:00 a.m. mass at the Church of the Guardian Angel on Monday.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Irene M. (Pottie) Whiteway, 84, of Scituate, died Saturday unexpectedly
after suffering a heart attack in South Shore Hospital. Born in Cape
Breton, Nova Scotia, she came to Cambridge at age 20 and was an assembler
at the Green Shoe Manufacturing Co. of Roxbury. She later worked in St.
Margaret's Hospital and retired in 1970. She was a member of the 60 Plus
and Senior Citizens club of Scituate. She leaves her daughter, Mildred E.
Giovanniello of Scituate; her brother, William Pottie of Cambridge; a
sister, Margaret Monbourquette of Montreal, and a granddaughter. A funeral
Mass will be said Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Nativity Church,
Scituate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Scituate.

WHITE, Verna Kathleen - 72, L'Ardoise, Richmond County, died November 11,
1993, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Halifax, she
was a daughter of the late Robert and Helena (Purdy) Kelly. She is
survived by four sons, Robert, Calgary; Alan, Winnipeg; James, L'Ardoise;
Brian, St. Peter's; three daughters, June (Mrs. Peter McDunnough),
Sackville; Helena White, Samsonville; Joan (Mrs. Frederick Coutu),
Massachusetts; eight grandchildren; several nephews. She was predeceased
by two sisters, Evelyn, Marie. Funeral was held November 14 in Holy
Guardian Angels Church, L'Ardoise, Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating.
Burial was held in Mount Calvary Cemetery, L'Ardoise.

WESTLAKE, Eva Marie - 70, Lower L'Ardoise, Richmond Co., died March 11,
1995, in Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney. Born in Grand Greve, she was a
daughter of the late James and Sophie (Sampson) Hall. She was a member of
the Royal Canadian Legion, ladies auxiliary. She worked with the Catholic
Children's Aid Society in providing care for homeless children in
Hamilton, Ont. She was employed for several years at Ocean View Manor,
Eastern Passage. Surviving are her husband, Gordon; daughter, Patsy Blais,
Scotch Village; sons, James, Victoria, B.C.; Clifford, Bedford; five
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Patsy Hall, St.
Peter's; Delena Buchanan, Val Rico, Fla.; brother, Charles, Halifax. She
was predeceased by a sister, Alice Bianco; brother, James. Visitation 2-4,
7-9 p.m. today in L'Ardoise Funeral Parlour. Funeral 3 p.m. Tuesday in
Holy Guardian Angels Church, Rev. L. MacLean officiating. Burial in Mount
Calvary Cemetery, L'Ardoise. Family flowers only. Donations to Alzheimers

WESTLAKE, Harold J. - 78, Lower L'Ardoise, died September 8, 1995, in
Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the
late James and Gertrude (Nordin) Westlake. Prior to retirement, he was
postmaster in L'Ardoise post office. He was a veteran of the Second World
War, serving in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps from 1942-1945 in
Italy and Holland. He was a life member and served three year terms as
president of branch 110, Royal Canadian Legion, L'Ardoise, of which he was
one of the original charter members and received the Meritorious Service
Medal for dedication to the legion and his community. He was an active
member and served on the board of directors of L'Ardoise Credit Union. He
was also active in the Army Cadet Corps as service officer for many years.
He was a former municipal councillor for the L'Ardoise area. Surviving are
brothers, Clarence, Gordon, L'Ardoise; sisters, Theresa, Agnes, Dartmouth;
Florence, Point Michaud; seven stepsons; two stepdaughters; several
stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the
former Elizabeth Brymer; brother, Charles; sister, Nora. Visitation 2-4,
7-9 p.m. Sunday in L'Ardoise Funeral Parlour. Funeral 10 a.m. Monday in
Holy Guardian Angels Church, Rev. MacIntyre officiating. Burial in Mount
Calvary Cemetery. Donations to Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements under

WHITMAN, Marie Ann - Passed away October 13, 1999, in the Armview Estates
Nursing Home, Halifax. She was
born in Halifax and was a long-time resident of the Embassy Towers. She
spent many pleasant hours in the Halifax Public Gardens with her friends
enjoying the flowers. She will be missed by her many friends and
acquaintances. She was a daughter of the late Thomas and Matilda (Pottie)
(Poty) Martell. Surviving are sister, Florence Muise, Halifax; son,
Ernest, Leslie and his wife Ann Whitman, Halifax; daughters, Bernice (Mrs.
Harold Hines), Central Argyle, Yarmouth Co.; Joan (Mrs. Arthur Abbott),
Halifax; Donna Marie Whitman, Halifax; five grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by
her husband, Frederick Leslie; brothers, Charles, Walter, Lawrence;
sisters, Mary Copeland, Rita Scroggins, Alvina Perrier. Cremation has
taken place. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today, in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666
Windsor Street, Halifax. A graveside committal service will be held in St.
James Anglican Church Cemetery, Port Dufferin, at a later date. In lieu of

Names of three killed in crash released
MARSHY HOPE - Three members of a Cape Breton
family have been identified as those killed in a head-on collision Monday
afternoon on Highway 104 in Pictou County. Killed in the crash were Jean
Ellen Mombourquette, 65, of Rockdale; her daughter, Sharon Elizabeth Webb,
45, of Lower L'Ardoise; and Mrs.Mombourquette's brother-in-law, George
Albert Wright, 65, of Port Hawkesbury. Mr. Wright was the driver of a
westbound vehicle that was struck by a sport utility vehicle driven by a
45-year-old Ontario man. A third passenger in the Wright vehicle - which
was travelling to Halifax for Mrs. Mombourquette's son's university
graduation - and the SUV driver remained in hospital Tuesday with serious
injuries. A Stellarton RCMP
spokesman said the SUV crossed the centre line on a straight stretch near
Marshy Hope and sideswiped a car driven by a 74-year-old woman, whose
80-year-old husband was her passenger, and then collided head-on with Mr.
Wright's car. Roads were dry under overcast skies at the time.
RCMP are investigating.

WEBB, Sharon Elizabeth - 45, Lower L'Ardoise,
passed away May 14, 2001, as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Born in
Halifax, she was a daughter of John Mark and the late Jean Mombourquette.
She was a member of Holy Guardian Angels Parish. She was a dental
assistant at Dr. W.B. Kingston Medical Clinic with Dr. T. Mombourquette.
Sharon was known for her kindness towards her pets. She is survived by
Donnie Webb, Dartmouth; daughters, Shelly (Glen), Rockdale; son, Derek
(Jenny), Lower L'Ardoise; granddaughter, Morgan; brothers, Mark, Lower
L'Ardoise; John, Dartmouth; Wade, Chezzetcook; sisters, Lisa, Enfield.
Sharon's mother, Jean passed away as a result of the same motor vehicle
accident. Cremation has taken place. Funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday
in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L'Ardoise, Rev. John MacIntyre
officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations to W.B.
Kingston Medical Clinic. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of
J.F. Greene Funeral Services Limited, Port Hawkesbury.

WILKS, Julia Mae - 75, Halifax, passed away on October 9, 2004, in the New
Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in L'Ardoise, Cape Breton, she was a
daughter of the late Helair and Mary (Briand) Taylor. She is survived by
her loving sons, Wayne (Mamie), Gary and Kenneth; grandchildren, Miranda
and Adam; great-grandson, Coady; brothers, Walter, Charles and Herman;
sisters, Rita McKay and Gertrude Mombourquette; brother-in-law, Grant
Wilks. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Wilks; brothers, Louis,
Fred and Frank; sisters, Hilda Pottie and Joan Burkey. Julia was a
founding member of the Ostomy Association of Nova Scotia. Cremation has
taken place. Family burial at a later date. Thank you to the infirmary
nurses and caring staff of Unit 4.1 and Palliative care.

WESTLAKE, Clarence John - 78, Lower L'Ardoise, passed away peacefully with
his wife and daughters at his side on March 4, 2007. He was greeted at the
gates of heaven by his infant daughter, Doreen; mother, Gertie; father,
Jim; brothers, Bobby, Howard, and sisters, Nora and Florence. He was a
loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed dearly by his
wife, Lorraine; daughters, Anne, Brenda, Alana and her husband Glenn;
grandchildren, Christopher, Adam and Breagh; brother, Gordon; sisters,
Aggie and Theresa; many nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was an
active member of L'Ardoise Legion Branch 110 for many years, a great
supporter of L'Ardoise Volunteer Fire Department, IOF member, and an
involved community and church member. He enjoyed fishing, hunting,
gardening, carpentry and helping out his neighbours. He was a
"mister-fix-it" and enjoyed a new challenge. He loved going to card games,
teasing and joking around with his family and friends. He will be missed
by all who knew and loved him. Cremation has taken place under the
direction of Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter's. Visitation in
Holy Guardian Angels Funeral Home on Friday, March 9, from 2-9 p.m.
Memorial service Saturday, March 10, at 11 a.m. in Holy Guardian Angels
Parish. Private burial by family members to follow. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or L'Ardoise
Volunteer Fire Department. Special thank you from family members to the
L'Ardoise Fire Department, paramedics, Strait Richmond Hospital staff, St.
Martha's Regional Hospital staff and Father Claire Johnson, for their
kindness.
