Lost Overboard -Patrick Sampson one the crew of the schooner Smiling
Water, which arrived at Halifax from L'Ardoise, C.B., a few days ago was
lost overboard and drown from that vessel on Sunday night last. The Capt.
reports that the crew were engaged in jibing the main sheet at the time
and does not know whether Sampson was knocked over by the boom or took a
fit. Every effort was made to save him, but without success, as he sank
soon after going overboard and was not seen again. The deceased leaves a
wife and one child at L'Ardoise.
Note: Patrick Sampson b. August 5, 1841 was the son of Vital Samson and

Mrs. C. Simmons, Glace Bay - Jan.23 - The death occurred at the home of
her daughter this afternoon of Mrs. Catherine Simmons, well known
Brookland St. resident. The deceased had been ill for some time and
was 77 years of age. Mrs. Simmons' husband predeceased her by many years
and she had been living with her daughter, Mrs. Wallace Chiasson, 85
Brookland St., for some time. The deceased us survived by
three daughters, Viola, Mrs. W. Chiasson, Brookland St., with whom she
resided; Annie Mae, Mrs. L. Chiasson, Brookland St. and Lila, Mrs. Ernest
Kinslow, Table Head. Two sons also survive, Thomas and John James
Simmons, all of Glace Bay. A brother Dan
Campbell of L'Ardoise, Richmond County also survives. Mrs. Simmons
was a member of the International Bible Students. Burial will be
made in St. Mary's Cemetery under the direction of Curry's Funeral Home.

Mrs. Catherine Simmons, Glace Bay, Jan.26, - The funeral of Mrs. Catherine
Simmons, took place Saturday afternoon from the residence of her daughter,
Mrs. W. Jessome, Brookland St. and was attended by many friends and
acquaintances of the well known lady. Many floral pieces and other
tokens of sympathy were received by the bereaved family indicating the
regret felt at the passing of Mrs. Simmons. Rev. Canon J. Crewe, rector of
St. Mary's Church of England officiated at the service at the house and at
the graveside in St. Mary's cemetery. Pallbearers were: George
Kinslow; Russell Kinslow; Harold Kinslow; Ed Pyke; H.J. Barlow; and Albert
Kinslow. The funeral was under the direction of Curry's Funeral
Homes.
June 27,1956 Former Resident Dies in Baltimore
A native of St. Peter's and well known to a wide circle of old friends and
associates in Sydney, Trenton and New Glasgow, Bernard D. Shanahan died
recently in Baltimore, where he resided for many years and was
supertendent of the Bendix plant in that city for many years. He was in
his 63rd year. A son of the late John and Maria Shanahan, he worked at
Sydney Steel Plant, machine shop until the outbreak of the First Great War
in 1914 when he went to Trenton, N.S . to work in the shipbuilding plant
there. Later he served with the Merchant Marines during the war. Since
1919 he lived in the United States and during his long residence in
Baltimore was employed with the Bendix firm, were he eventually rose where
he rose to the post of mechanical supt. He is survived by his widow and an
only son who is in the legal staff for government in Washington, D.C.
Other surviving members of the family are: Gus, well known Sydney resident
and retired CNR conductor; Herman, Oregon; James at Canso; Mrs. Emery
Strong, Vancouver, B.C.; Raymond, owner of a textile mills and Mike, a
service station owner, both of Seattle and Walter in New Glasgow. Mr. and
Mrs. Gus Shanahan attended the obsequies.

Bert S. Sampson, 61, died October 20, at L'Ardoise. He was born in Halifax. He served in World War II with the Princess Louise Fusiliers. He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons Gerald of Winnipeg; James, of Halifax; one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Gagnon of Edmonton, Alberta. The body is at the Halifax Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place Friday at St. Patrick's Church at 10:15 a.m. Interment will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

William Sampson Lower L'Ardoise- William Edward Sampson, 89, died Saturday
at St. Martha Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Lower L'Ardoise, he was a son
of the late Edward and Dolina (Gracey) Sampson. He was a retired
fisherman. Surviving are; two sisters, Angeline (Mrs. Joseph Barrette),
Halifax; Florence, (Mrs. Existe Peters), Lower L'ardoise; a brother,
Albert, U.S.A. He was predeceased by two wives. The body is at the
L'Ardoise Parish Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today
in the L'Ardoise Community Center. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery.

Barnaby George Sampson, 86, of Sydney,
formerly of Lower L'Ardoise, died Wednesday in St. Rita Hospital. Born in Lower L'Ardoise, he was a son of the late George and
Sarah Sampson. He resided in Lower L'Ardoise most of his life and lived in
Sydney for number of years. He was a member of St. Mary's Church and Club
55. He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Peters; two sons,
Napoleon, Pondville, and Martin, Cheticamp; nine daughters, Laura (Mrs.
Fred Pottie), Halifax; Kathleen (Mrs. Alonzo Pottie), Toronto; Rose (Mrs.
Roy MacLean), Sydney River; Sarah (Mrs. Alvin Pyke), Annerine (Mrs.
Jonathon Desveaux), Marie (Mrs. Albert Mombourquette), and Janet (Mrs.
Allan Arsenault), all of Sydney; Mary (Mrs. David Campbell) and Doris

grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by five
brothers, a daughter and two infant sons. The body is in T. W. Curry's

Mrs. Mary Sampson, 89, of Lower L'Ardoise died Monday at home. Born in
West Chezzetcook, she was the former Mary Margaret Belfontaine. She is
survived by a son, John James Samspon, at home; four daughters, Mary Rose,
at home; Irene (Mrs. Edward J. Levy), Marie (Ms. Joseph Bona) and Madeline
(Mrs. Albert J. Sampson) all of Lower L'Ardoise; 16 grandchildren and 19
great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph S. The
body is in L'Ardoise Funeral Home. Funeral will be 10:20am Thursday in
Holy Guardian Angels Church, with burial in the parish cemetery.

Richmond County – Raymond George Samson, 78, of L’Ardoise died
Wednesday in City Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was a son of the
late Albert and Angeline (Martell) Samson. He was a third degree member of
the Knights of Columbus. He worked for the Department of Public Welfare
for more that 27 years and was a school teacher for 19 years. Surviving
are his wife, the former Emma Marie Briand; three sons, Albert T. and
Byron J., both of Vancouver; Carl M., L’Ardoise, three brothers, Charles
E., Halifax; Simon James, Grand Greve; Bernard, LaChute, Que., two
grandchildren. The body is in L’Ardoise Funeral Home. Funeral will be 10
a.m. Saturday in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L’Ardoise with burial in
Mount Calvert Cemetery, L’Ardoise.

Rita Hospital here. Born in Lower L'Ardoise she was a daughter of the late
Dan and Emma (Marchand) Peters. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Church,
Sydney. She is survived by nine daughters, Laura (Mrs. Fred Pottie),
Halifax; Kay (Mrs. Alonzo Pottie), Toronto; Rose (Mrs. Roy MacLean), Sarah
(Mrs. Alvin Pyke), Annerine (Mrs. Johnathan Desveaux), Marie (Mrs. Albert
Mombourquette) and Janet (Mrs. Allan Arsenault), all of Sydney; Mary (Mrs.
David Campbell) and Doris (Mrs. Ralph Allen), both of South Bar; two sons
Napoleon, Dartmouth; Martin, Cheticamp; four sisters, Beatrice and Serena,
both of Montreal; Katie and Emiline, Lower L'Ardoise; two brothers,

grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Barnaby, a daughter

in Sydney City Hospital. Born in Lower L'Ardoise she was a daughter of the
late Thomas and Margaret (Murphy) McGrath. She was a member of St.
Joseph's Parish. She is survived by 2 daughters, Helen (Mrs. Dick
Cushing), Bridgewater; Barbara (Mrs. Kevin Greig), Westmount; a son Rev.
Russell, St, Vincent, West Indies; three sisters, Mrs. Mildred (Dolly)
Landry and Mrs. Katie Sampson both of Lower L'Ardoise, Mrs. Agnes McNeil,
Halifax; a brother, Billy, Halifax, a grandson. She was predeceased by her
husband, Patrick; a sister, Sarah Ann, two brothers, Robert and Thomas.
The body will be in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel 7-9pm today and Holy
guardian Angels Church Hall, L'Ardoise from Saturday until 3pm Sunday,
when the funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made

William A. SAMPSON - William A. (Anthony) SAMPSON, 83, Lower
L'Ardoise, died Wednesday in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born
in Lower L' Ardoise, he was the son of the late Simon and Mary (MURPHY)
SAMPSON. He graduated from Coyne Electrical School, Chicago, in 1940. He
served overseas with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. In
1947, he established Anthony Sampson's Electrical Contracting and in 1968
opened Anthony Sampson and Son Radio, T. V. and Appliances, in St.
Peter's. He retired in 1982 and was a member of Holy Guardian Angels
Parish and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 110 in L'Ardoise.
He is survived by his wife, the former Frances MADDEN; five sons, Arthur
and Michael, Lower L'Ardoise, Simon, Antigonish, Paul, Bridgewater,
Donald, Coldbrook and 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister,
Rose Marie. The body is in the L'Ardoise Funeral Home with visiting from
10 am to 10 pm today. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 am in
the Holy Guardian Angels Church, L'Ardoise. Burial in the parish cemetery.

STUART, Harold Cecil - 91, Lower L'Ardoise, formerly of West Quoddy, died
April 24, 1993, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in West Quoddy,
he was a son of the late Colin and Clara (Smith) Stuart. He was a member
of St. James Anglican Church, Port Dufferin and a church warden for 40
years. He was a member of IOOF Lodge, 138, Mosher River, receiving his
55-year pin and certificate in 1984. He was the last surviving member of
his immediate family. He is survived by two daughters, Lorraine Westlake,
Lower L'Ardoise, with whom he resided for the past three years; Jenny
Pottie, West Quoddy; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. He was
predeceased by his first wife, the former Violet Smith; infant daughter,
Violet Victoria; second wife, the former Hilda Vogler; five sisters.
Visitation was held Sunday in Crowell's Funeral Home, Sheet Harbour.

Hill Medical Centre. Born in L’Ardoise, Richmond County, he was the son of
the late Arthur and Mary Jane (Briand) Samson. He served in the Canadian
Merchant Marine during the Second World War, and prior to his retirement
worked as a stevedore for 30 years. He was a member of St. John the
Baptist Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, the former
Margaret (Maggie) Chevarie; two sons, Arthur and Michael, both of
Williamswood; daughter Diane (Mrs. Mike Burns), New Minas; brother Gerard,
Halifax. Sister, Beatrice (Mrs. Al Hammond) Ontario; five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother Simon; two sisters Ada, Agnes. Visitation

stationary engineer with Olands and Sons until his retirement in 1969. He

SAMPSON, Quinten W. - 75, Lower L'Ardoise, died January 18, 1994, at home.
Born in L'Ardoise, he was a son of the late Albany and Rose (Preshong)
Sampson. He served in the Royal Canadian Army RCASC during the Second
World War and was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 47, St.
Peter's. He was employed with the Richmond District School Board for 37
years, first as a schoolbus driver in the Lower L'Ardoise and Point
Michaud area and later as assistant supervisor of maintenance. He was an
active member of the community, serving as past president of the Dr. W.B.
Kingston Memorial Clinic; L'Ardoise Volunteer Fire Department; active
member of L'Ardoise Mens' Club and until his recent illness, was president
of the L'Ardoise Emergency Development Club. He was also an active member
of Holy Guardian Angels Parish, serving as president of the parish
council. He contributed his time and effort to the Acadian Day Festival
and other parish activities. He was commissionaire of oaths and a justice
of the peace, serving his community and surrounding areas. He is survived
by his wife, the former Edna Sampson; two brothers, Charlie Stan,
L'Ardoise; Edwin, Montreal. He was predeceased by three brothers, Desmond,
Gerard, Reggie; sister, Eleanor Reid. Cremation has taken place under the
direction of Alex A. Morrison

SAMPSON, Murdock - 96, 225 Kings Rd., Dominion, died August 21, 1994, at
home. Born in L'Ardoise, he was a son of the late Lawrence and Annie (MacNeil)
Sampson. He was employed as a coal miner and worked with the Dominion Coal
Company, retiring in 1960. He also worked in the coal mines of Western
Canada and, for a short time, did commercial fishing. He was very active
with UMWA, where he served on various committees and was one of a group of
miners to first introduce the death benefit. He was an active member of
Dominion Garden Club and a devout member of Immaculate Conception Parish,
Bridgeport. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He
is survived by a son, Lawrence, Dominion; three daughters, Mrs. Edna
Fraser, Halifax; Rosemary (Mrs. Graham Kent), New Hampshire, Mass.; Flora
Mae (Mrs. Joe Kochera), New Jersey; 11 grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two daughters, Anne, Anita in
infancy; son, Adam; two brothers, Harry, Fred; three sisters, Flora,

Canadian Army in 1954, retiring in 1976 and was a commissionaire until
1990. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Atlantic Branch 153.

SAMPSON, Leo P. - The death of Leo P. Sampson,
L'Ardoise, occurred March 30, 2003, at home. Born in L'Ardoise, he was a
son of the late Pascal and Jane (Martell) Sampson. He was a fisherman for
many years and also worked at several other jobs. He is survived by
sisters, Emeline (Mrs. Johnnie Peters), L'Ardoise; Sophie (Mrs. Harold
Doe), Toronto; Mae (Mrs. Kawuza), St. Peter's; Rose, at home; companion,
Jackie Landry. He was predeceased by brothers, Clarence, Wallace, Gerald,
Gordon; sisters, Irene (Mrs. Joe Gaudet), Delia (Mrs. Barney Rogers), Emma
(Mrs. Urbain Martell), and one sister in infancy. Cremation has taken
place. No visitation. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5,
in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L'Ardoise, Rev. John MacIntyre
officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Arrangements are under the
direction of Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter's.

SAMPSON, Maimie Catherine - 91, Halifax, passed
away Sunday, October 26, 2003, in Northwood Centre. Born in Lower
L'Ardoise, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Mary
Jane (Gracie) Sampson. At an early age she moved to Halifax and was
employed with the Provincial Department of Highways. She is survived by
many nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her
immediate family. She was predeceased by brothers, Patrick, Thomas,
Albert, John and Richard; sisters, Elizabeth, Mary Alice, Julia, Elizabeth
Jane, Marie, Mary Jane, Emaline, Lena, Anne Bella, Theresa and Rachel.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor
St., Halifax. Funeral mass will be held 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's

Richmond Villa, St. Peter's. Born in L'Ardoise, Richmond Co., she was a
daughter of the late Thomas and Odille Briand. She is survived by sons,
Leonard, Gregory and Paul; daughter, Rita; sisters, Rita Petrin, Montreal;
Emma Samson, St. Peter's. She was predeceased by husband, Leonard; nine
brothers and sisters.
Visitation 10-2 p.m. with funeral mass 3 p.m. today both in Holy Guardian
Angel Parish, L'Ardoise, Rev. John MacIntyre officiating. Cremation and

SAMPSON, Sister Helen - Formerly of Halifax, passed away in The Convent of
the Good Shepherds, Windsor, Ont., where she had been serving the Lord for
the last 32 years. Born November 27, 1914, she passed away April 8, 2004.
She was a daughter of the late William E. and Alice M. Sampson (formerly
of Rockdale, Cape Breton). Besides her parents, she was predeceased by
brothers, Robert "Bobby", Almon (both of Rockdale); sister,
Florence (formerly of Halifax). She is survived by sisters, Margaret
Landry, Rockdale; Mary Briand, Irene Leslie, Ruby Sampson, all of Halifax;
brothers, Clarence, Halifax; William "Bucky", Frederick
"Freddy", Rockdale; Douglas, Antigonish. She served many years
in the Convent of The Good Shepherds on Quinpool Road. She was one of the
survivors of the Halifax Explosion. She touched many hearts in her years
and will be missed by many. She was laid to rest in Windsor Heavenly Rest
Cemetery, Windsor, Ont. A funeral mass will be held 4 p.m. May 22, in St.
Joseph's Church.

STONE, Daniel Peter - 78, Rockdale, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 27, 2004, in Strait Richmond Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born in Lynches River, Richmond Co., he was a son of the late Mary Jane Gracie and John L. Stone. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his sons, Tom (Bonnie), Halifax; John Dan (Anne), Halifax; Joe (Jeannie), Coxheath; Ambrose (Jean), Coxheath; daughters, Madeline (Jack) Boudreau, Port Hawkesbury; Anne (Steven) Mombourquette, Dartmouth; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Dick (Theresa), Grand Greve; Clarence (Barbara), Little Harbour; Ernie, Lynches River; sisters, Kay Fedora, Sydney; Rena Jessome, Ontario; Laura Morrison, St. Peter's; Mildred (Benedict) Sampson, Lynches River. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Theresa (Martell); infant children, Mary, Anne and Paul; brothers, Johnnie, Tommie, Charlie and John; as well as his sister, Mary. In his early years, he worked as a lumberjack for the Mercy Paper Company. He was in the operating engineers and labour union. He worked construction most of his life, he also worked at A.E.C.L. Port Hawkesbury. He always enjoyed a good joke and laugh. He took pleasure in visiting the wharf to chat with the fisherman and watch the boats come in with their catches. He will be missed by all those who knew him, especially his special neighbours and good friends, Leona and Alfred Landry, who we can't thank enough for their kindness. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Friday, April 30, in Holy Guardian Angel Funeral Home, L'Ardoise, Richmond Co. SAMPSON, Alonzo J. (M.I.D.) - 80, Lower L'Ardoise, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2004. Born in L'Ardoise on April 2, 1924, he was a son of the late James and Eliza (Peters) Sampson. Alzono was a retired stevedore from the International Longshoremen's Association in Halifax where he was employed for many
years. He was also a seasonal lobster fishermen. A proud veteran of the Second World War (1942-45), Alonzo enlisted a year younger than was possible, driven by his desire to serve his country by not revealing his actual age. He served with both the Calgary Highlanders and the Black Watch. Alonzo was very humble about receiving the Oak Leaf, being mentioned in dispatches by the King of England for distinguished and gallant service while serving in North Western Europe, including Holland, Germany, France, England and Belgium. Alonzo was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 110, L'Ardoise. He is survived by his loving and most devoted wife, Alice (Sampson); daughter, Linda Poxon, Burlington, Ont.; Josilyn Levia (Jim), Montreal; Brian (Andree), Lower L'Ardoise; Barry (Annette), Port Hawkesbury; Avery (Linda), Halifax; grandchildren who he loved very much and was so very proud of, Brian (Caroline) Poxon, Victoria Adelin, Kaitlynn and Jamison Sampson. He is also survived by sisters, Edna Sampson, Lower L'Ardoise; Hilda Mac Martell, St. Peters. He was predeceased by twin sons in infancy and brothers, Ephrium and Wallace. In celebrating life he enjoyed the musical talents of his three boys, as well as the company of his family and friends at gatherings. He was an avid deer and duck hunter with many stories to
share. Visitation will be held from 2-9 p.m. on Friday, June 4, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 5. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L'Ardoise, with burial to follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery,
L'Ardoise.

SAMPSON, Robert Patrick - It is with great sorrow that the family of
Robert Patrick Sampson, 42, L'Ardoise, Cape Breton, announces his sudden
passing on Sunday, July 25, 2004. He was a son of Louis Sampson and the
late Bernice (Lafford) Sampson. He is survived by his wife, Rachel; son,
Dylan; stepmother, Isabelle; only brother, Earl; nieces, Deanna and
goddaughter Jessica; stepsisters, Yvette, Tanya, Dawn; numerous aunts,
uncles and cousins. He will be sadly missed by family and friends,
especially godparents, Jules and Monica Sampson. He was a welder and later
joined his father and brother in the fishing industry. He was an avid
hunter and thoroughly enjoyed outdoor sports. He was a member of Holy
Guardian Angels Parish, L'Ardoise. Visitation will be in Holy Guardian
Angels Parish Funeral Home Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be
held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L'Ardoise, Rev.
John MacIntyre officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

SOWARD, Hilda Catherine - 88, Eastern Passage. It is with great sadness that I announce the sudden passing of my grandmother in Melville Lodge, Halifax, in the early morning of September 1, 2004. Born in L'Ardoise, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Alvina (Peters) Rehberg. She was a lifelong resident of Eastern Passage and a member of St. Andrews Church. She worked at Fairey Aviation prior to retirement. She was mostly known for her charity work at Tallahassee School in its early years, having bingos to raise money to purchase items for the school. She is survived by her only daughter, Helena Osborne; grandchildren, Frank McDow and Cathy Drake; great-grandchildren, Roy Snow, Donnie and Scott Cheverie; sisters, Marianne Lapper, Dorothy Ward, and Edna Eddy; brothers, George, Lawrence, and Tommy. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul; sisters, Kay Shore and Mary Dillman, and brother, Joseph. Arrangements are entrusted to Eastern Passage Community Funeral Home. and Margaret (Mombourquette) Sampson. She was a resident of St. Peter's
for most of her life. She is survived by sons, John Daniel, Prospect Road,
