The Death of Sidney Groom The death took place in the Victoria General Hospital at Halifax this week of Sidney Groom, a young man belonging to Grand Greve. The deceased was a victim of
tuberculosis of the throat. He was twenty-five years of age and leaves a wife and one child.
The remains arrive on Thursday evening.

William Gracie, Glace Bay - William Gracie, 75, long time resident of
Beacon St.,and a retired employee of No. 20 colliery, died at St.
Joseph's Hospital, Monday night. He had been a patient there since
January. A native of L'Ardoise, Richmond County, Mr. Gracie lived
in Glace Bay for most of his life. His wife died in 1923.
For several months before entering hospital he lived with his brother,
George Gracie, 55 Hillside Avenue. He was a member of St. Anne's
Parish. Mr. Gracie was superannuated by the Coal Company in 1947.
He is survived by a stepdaughter, Florence; two sisters, Mrs. Maurice
Mombourquette; Mrs. Alex Devison; two brothers, Wilfred and George all
of Glace Bay. A brother Robert died at New Waterford four years
ago. The funeral will be held from 55 Hillside Avenue

Patrick Robert Gracie - Glace Bay - Funeral service for Patrick Robert
Gracie of Glace Bay was held at St. John the Baptist Church, Glace Bay
with interment in the parish cemetery. He worked as a miner for 50
years. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret Briand, seven sons,
Fabien, Toronto; James, Leo, Charles, Alfred, William and Daniel, all of
Glace Bay; two daughters, Mary, Mrs. D.J. Lewis, Toronto; and Mary
Elizabeth at home; two brothers, Joseph and Leo of Glace Bay; three
sisters, Mrs. Florence Cameron, Sydney; Mrs. Margaret Moore, Detroit;
and Mrs. Ellen O'Neill at home and sixteen grandchildren.

J.H. Gracie - Glace Bay, Joseph H. Gracie, 73, of 14 Gracie St. died at
St. Joseph's Hospital, Wednesday. He had been unwell the past two
years and entered the hospital last August. A life long resident
of this community, he was employed with the Dominion Coal Company for 52
years until his retirement in 1955. He worked in No. 2 and No. 20
collieries. He was a member of St. Leo's parish. Mr. Gracie
was well and favourably known in the community. He is survived by
his wife the former Christine MacGillivray; four sons, Thomas at home;
John and William in Glace Bay and Harold in Toronto; three sisters,
Ellen O'Neill, Glace Bay; Mrs. Margaret Moore, Sydney; Florence, Mrs.
Allan Cameron; and a brother Patrick Gracie, Glace Bay. There are
sixteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. A brother
Patrick Robert Gracie died one month ago. The remains are resting at the
family home and burial will be made in St. Anne's Cemetery.

Gracie, Florence A., Lower L'Ardoise - Retired school teacher Florence
Ann Gracie, 96, of Lower L'Ardoise, Richmond County, died Sunday at
home. Born in L'Ardoise, she was the daughter of the late Dominic
and Adele (Mombourquette) Sampson. She taughter school and was a
life-long resident of the area. She was the last surviving member
of her immediate family. She is survived by a foster son Donald
Boudreau, Lower L'Ardoise; four grandchildren and five great
grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; two
sisters and six brothers. The body will be in L'Ardoise Parish
Funeral Home after 3 pm. today. Funeral service will be at 10 am.
Wednesday in the Church of the Holy Guardian Angels, L'Ardoise, Rev.
Basil Boudreau officiating. Burial will be at later date in the
parish cemetery. Donations may be made to the Dr. W.B. Kingston
Medical Clinic, or the parish cemetery fund.

GRAHAM, Kenneth Charles - 77, 3538 Bay Ave., New Waterford, died March
5, 1995, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in New
Waterford, he was a son of the late Allan and Mary Agnes (Gracie)
Graham. He was a member of All Saints Anglican Church. In his younger
years he was an avid sportsman. He was a member of New Waterford Strands
Basketball team and bowled for many years. At one time, he managed the
New Waterford Bowling
Alley and Pool Hall. He was a hunter and an excellent gardener. He was
also inducted into the New Waterford Sports Hall of Fame for his
expertise in snooker. He served overseas during the Second World War and
was a member of branch 15, Royal Canadian Legion, New Waterford. Before his retirement,
he worked at Hinchey's Supermarket and operated his own convenience
store on Ellsworth Avenue. Surviving are his wife, the former Helen
Rockett; sons, Charles, Glen, New Waterford; Brian, at home; daughters, Millie (Mrs.
Lorne MacQuarrie), New Waterford, Donna, Glace Bay; eight grandchildren;

13, 2002, at home with her husband and three of her nieces at her
bedside. Born in Lower L'Ardoise, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the
late Maurice Sampson and Rebecca (Bona) (Sampson) Pottie. For 28 years
she and George resided in Port Hawkesbury where they enjoyed the company
of many friends until relocating to Halifax one year ago. Rose Ann was
an avid bingo player and strong supporter of the liberal party. She will
be remembered as a vibrant individual who accepted everyone just as they
are. Besides her husband, Captain George Grant, she is survived by
sister, Mary Sampson, Dartmouth; half-brother, Cyril Pottie, Halifax;
half-sister, Bernadette Duffy, Chezzetcook; brother-in-law, Harold
Hanson, Bedford; niece, Elizabeth (Garnet) Sampson, Sydney. She will
always be remembered as "Godmother" by her nieces, Juanita
(Michael) Healy, Dartmouth; Deborah (Jay) Campbell, Calgary; Robyn (Ron)
Peterson, Cambridge. She was "Aunt Rose" to Luc (Annie)
Bigaouette, Richard (Danielle) Bigaouette, Ann (Udo) Stundner and
Marie-Helene Roy, all of Montreal. Besides her parents, she was
predeceased by sister, Evangeline Hanson and an infant brother.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home,
6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday,
September 28, in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L'Ardoise, Father John
MacIntyre officiating. Ashes will be scattered at sea near the L'Ardoise

GRACIE, Joseph S. "Joe" - 75, L'Ardoise. A wonderful husband, great dad,
father-in-law, friend and loving grandfather "Papa", Joseph Samuel
Gracie, passed away quietly and peacefully in Strait Richmond Hospital,
Evanston, on April 28, 2006, with Beatrice, his devoted and loving wife
of 47 and a half years, and daughters, Wanda, Brenda and Paula, by his
side, who gave him tremendous support, love and care during his
courageous battle with cancer. He will be missed by all who had the
privilege of knowing such a wonderful, caring person, especially his
grandchildren, Marc MacIntosh, Jordan Gracie and Kayleigh Gracie Wells,
and sons-in-law, Edward and Tim. Born in Lower L'Ardoise, he was a son
of the late Samuel and Louise (Sampson) Gracie. Joe was employed at The
Lord Nelson Hotel from 1952 to 1975 when he retired and moved his family
to Cape Breton; daughters, Wanda (Mrs. James Edward MacIntosh), Lower
Sackville; Brenda Gracie, Halifax; Paula Gracie, Calgary, Alta.;
brothers, Raymond (Shirley) Gracie, Gracieville; John (Shirley) Gracie,

Gracieville. He was predeceased by his parents, brother, George; a

in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L'Ardoise, on Saturday, May 6, at 2 p.m.
with Rev. Barrett-Clare Johnson officiating. In Joe's memory, donations
may be made to the Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society or Canadian

Barrett-Clare Johnson and all who assisted us during his illness at home

GAGNON, Virginia Beatrice - 88, St. Peter's, formerly of L'Ardoise, died
September 11, 2006, at her residence in Richmond Villa, St. Peter's.
Born in L'Ardoise, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and
Elizabeth (Mombourquette) LeRoux. She is survived by three
stepdaughters, three stepsons; sisters, Catherine Somme, Sault Ste.
Marie, Ont.; Margaret Beaver, Halifax; brothers, Clem, Richard, Gerard,
Alexander, all of L'Ardoise; several nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by her husband, Theophile; a stepdaughter, two stepsons;
brothers, Charlie, Bernard; sisters, Rose, Annie. A memorial service
will be held Saturday afternoon, September 16, at 2 p.m. in Holy
Guardian Angel Church, L'Ardoise, Rev. Barrett Clare Johnson
officiating. Burial to follow in Holy Guardian Angel Parish Cemetery,

GEORGE (Maddox), Violet May - 100, Halifax. It is with profound sadness
and yet with much gratefulness for a long, well-lived life, that we
announce the passing of our mother on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, in St.
Vincent's Nursing Home. Violet was born in Point Michaud, Cape Breton,
on July 22, 1907. She was the daughter of the late Margaret Nolan
(Maddox). She moved to Halifax and worked at the Victoria General
Hospital, CBC and MT&T, from where she retired. She was a devoted wife
and mother whose world revolved around her family and pets. She was
kind, caring and unselfish and her smile would light up a room. She is
survived by sons, Gary (Mary), Orillia, Ont.; Joseph (Arlene), Halifax,
and daughters, Joan (Ray, deceased) Marchand, Beaver Bank; Susie (Tom)
Moffat, Brookside; grandchildren, Donna (Norman) Bastarache, Glen
(Cindy) George, Christine (Kevin) Clarke, Larry George, Shelley, Andrew
(Mary) George, Larry (Sandra), Kevin (Lynn), Darrell (Tania) Marchand,
Tammy, Lori Dawn Moffat, and Elizabeth (Kevin) Schurman;
great-grandchildren, Melissa, Jasmin, Maddox, Samira, Shawn,
Christopher, Ryan, Bradley, Jeffrey, Melissa, Rebecca, Carissa, Cole,
Chase, Nya, and Ryan; great great-grandchild, Riley. She was predeceased
by her husband of many years, Wilfred Coleman George, and her special
cat, "Mittens". No visitation. Cremation has taken place under the
direction of Halifax Regional Crematorium. Funeral mass will be held in
the chapel at St. Vincent's Nursing Home, 2080 Windsor St., Halifax, at
9 a.m. on Monday, May 5. Interment will follow in Sunrise Park
Inter-Faith Cemetery, 2025 Prospect Rd. Memorial donations would be
greatly appreciated to St. Vincent's Nursing Home Chapel or 5th Floor,
