Obituary -It is our sad duty to chronicle the death of Mrs. J. Deveraux,
of Rockdale. Although suffering from a painful illness for months she
endured her affliction with christian resignation and without a murmur,
tho her condition was at times distressing and suffocation, of high
character, mild and amiable in disposition, always foremost in every
good work, a friend to the poor and needy, she will be very much
lamented in this neighbourhood.

December 18, 1979 John H. Delaney _ Glace Bay.
Union Leader Dies.....
Funeral Mass for John Coastal Courier H. Delaney, 71, one of Cape
Breton's great union leaders, was held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock
at St. Anne's Church. He resided at 340 King Edward Street. Mr. Delaney
died suddenly late Wednesday afternoon in his hotel room in Halifax
shortly before he was to return to Glace Bay. He had been in Halifax on
business in his role as chairman of the mining sector of the Provincial
Voluntary Economic Planning Commission. Mr. Delaney officially retired
from the United Mine Workers of America in 1975 when he was director of
International Affairs for the union. He served 25 years as International
Board Member for District 26, a post he held until his retirement.
Shortly after he retired the post of International Board Member, he
began a campaign and created the term (Automatic Assumption). That
developed into the Mineworkers Respiratory Disease Association and won
the support of all mine locals in Cape Breton. Mr. Delaney was elected
as chairman and held that post at the time of his death. The association
became a strong lobby on behalf of mine workers suffering from lung
diseases and it was only recently that Provincial Health Minister Dr.
Gerald Sheehy announced that a special unit dealing with lung diseases
would be established in Glace Bay. This was one of the major
accomplishments gained by the association. Mr. Delaney was born in Glace
Bay and educated here. His trade was that of a machinist and he began
his career working at No. 2 Colliery in 1926. Later he moved to the
Dominion Coal Company Central Machine Shop on Union Street. He
transferred to No. 11 for a short period and then returned to the
machine shop. He began attending meetings of Mechanical Local Union in
1933 and in 1934 attended a UMW District Convention. It was a steady
rise up the ladder in the UMW after that. He held practically every
office in Mechanic Local Union, and served as president for a term. In
1938 he was elected a district teller. In 1950 he sought the post of
International Board Member and won elections continually thereafter. In
1970 he won the post by acclamation, In 1954 he polled the largest vote
ever recorded in the history of District 26. During the period of 1970
to 1973 he was appointed president of District 18, a new district which
served the miners of Western Canada. He was a member of the
International Federation of Free Trade Unions with headquarters in
Belgium and the Miners Foundation of Labor, headquarters in London,
England. When he was appointed to the post of director of International
Affairs for the UMW he became the first Canadian to hold the post. At
the time of his retirement he urged members to guard and protect the UMW.
"Remember always, that a labor union is a working man' s best
friend". In the 1950's he was named to a special committee by
Premier Stanfield when Medicare was to be introduced to the province. It
was Mr. Delaney who was called on by committee to address a meeting of
the Nova Scotia Medical Association to outline the scheme. In 1969 he
served on a Royal Commission on Salaries for members of the Provincial
Legislature. He served on the Board of Governors of both St. Francis
Xavier and Dalhousie Universities. He maintained his membership in the
UMW of A, up to the time of his death. He was one of those who helped to
revive the Victorian Order of Nurses in Glace Bay in the 1960's. He was
a long time member of the St. Anne's Men's Choir, was active in golf and
was a member of the Lingan Golf Club, a member of Bridge Clubs, a
charter member of the Glace Bay Central Credit Union and served as
president for a period. He was a member of the Board of Directors for
CJFX Radio, and was a member of the Halifax Club. Mr. Delaney was a
member of St. Anne's Parish. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Ida Delaney
(nee Ida Gallant of Arichat), sons William, of Glace Bay, and Coady of
Sydney, sisters Margaret of Glace Bay, Mary of Calgary, Sr. Eugene of
