evening at the age of 25 years.

BENJAMIN BARRETT PASSES AT HOSPITAL
There passed away in the Victoria General Hospital following a surgical
operation, Benjamin Barrett, a respected resident of Lower L' Ardoise,
C.B. Mr. Barrett was engaged in farming and was esteemed through out the
district in which he lived. He is survived by his wife, for whom much
sympathy will be felt. The body will go forward today to L'Ardoise,
where the funeral and interment will take place.

Theopholis Burke
New Waterford, June 16 - The death of Theopholis Burke, one of the most
respected citizens of Lingan occurred on Thursday evening at 8 o'clock.
The deceased was born at L'Ardoise, Richmond County and was a resident
of that district of the past twenty-five years. He was forty-eight years
of age and is survived by his wife, two daughters, Elizabeth and
Mildred, one son John, one brother Arthur Burke of New Waterford, two
sisters, Mrs. Thomas Kelly, Jr., and Mrs James Cummings, and one
step-brother Charles Sampson. The funeral of the deceased will be held
to Saint Patrick's Church Lingan on Sunday morning at 9:30.

Gladys Loretta Berthier who died Wednesday at the Victoria General
Hospital, Halifax, after a brief illness. She was the daughter of
Tranquil and Mary (L__vy) Berthier of West L'Ardoise, C.B. She is
survived by her parents, two Brothers, Abraham and Alec; and three
sisters Annie (Mrs. F.B. Burke), South River Bourgeois, C.B.; Margaret
and Theresa at home. Funeral services will be at the Guardian Angel
Roman Catholic Church with Rev. P. A. Leblanc officiating. Burial will
be in the church cemetery.

Lower L'Ardoise- Mrs. Edith (Ada) Barrett, 93, Widow of James J.
Barrett, died yesterday following a short illness at St. Rita's
Hospital, Sydney. She is survived by one daughter, Margaret Elizabeth,
Halifax; one son, Augustus (Gus) at home; one brother, Freeman Sampson,
Lower L'Ardoise, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will
take place from her home at Lower L'Ardoise, Richmond County, Cape
Breton. Date has not been announced.

L'Ardoise-Adolphus Baren, 83, died Tuesday in Somerville, Mass. Born in
L'Ardoise, He was the son of the Late Captain and Mrs. James Baron.
Before moving to the United States, he operated a general business in
L'Ardoise. Surviving are his wife Sadie, Somerville; one brother, Edward
L., Halifax. Following requiem Mass, burial will be Friday in
Somerville.

New Waterford - Mathew Burk, 77, a long time resident of Lingan, passed
away at his home Saturday afternoon. He was born in L'Ardoise and was
the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Burke. He resided in Lingan 70
years. He was employed in No 14 Colliery and was transferred to No 12
after its closing. He retired about 5 years ago. His wife, the former
Amanda Kelly predeceased him by 17 years. A member of St. Joseph's
parish, Lingan, he was very active in parish activities. In his younger
days he was associated with many sports and maintained the interest
throughout his life. He is survived by four sons, Frank, Jackie,
Ignatuis, all of New Waterford, Clifford in Lingan and one daughter
Unice at home. He is also survived by three brothers, Joseph in South
Bar and Barney and Walter in Lingan. Remains are reposing at the V.J.
MacGillvray Funeral Home, 56 Smith St., New Waterford from where the
funeral will take place Tuesday in time for Solemn high mass at 10 a.m.,
in St. Joseph's Church, Lingan. Burial will follow in the parish
cemetery.

Joseph Annis Barrett, 79, born in L'Ardoise, Cape Breton, died in Halifax Sunday. He was the son of the late Cestin and Victoria (Martell) Barrett. He is survived by two sons, Walter, Armdale; and Joseph, Saint John, N.B.;Three daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Leslie Hood), Spokane, Wash.; Florence (Mrs. William Burns), Stoney Creek, Ont.; Kathleen (Mrs. Joseph Clannon); 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His wife is dead. The body is at the J.A. Walker Funeral Home, and will be transferred to L'Ardoise on Monday, for funeral service Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Guardian Angel, and interment in the church cemetery.

83),died Friday at home. Born in West L'Ardoise, he was a son of Mrs.
Celeste (Mombourquette) Briand and the late Simon Briand. Surviving
besides his mother and his wife the former Eva Mae Peters, are six sons,
Alex, L'ardoise; David, Calgary, Alta; Arthur, Eugene, both of Halifax;
Hector, Truro; Blair, at home; five daughters Doris (Mrs. Zivata
Vidokovic), Hamilton, Ont.; Elizabeth Ann, Sydney; Donna, Jacqueline,
Monica, all at home; four brothers, Walter, Stephen, Both of
Massachusetts; Abraham, New Hampshire; Patrick, L'ardoise; three
sisters, Annie (Mrs. Charles Mombourquette), Ottawa; Mary (Mrs, Henry
Paitras), New Hampshire; Betty (Mrs, Frank Durant), Texas; two grand
sons. The body is at his home. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2
p.m. in L'ardoise Parish Community Centre, Rev. Clarence MacDonald
officiating. Burial will be in parish cemetery. in lieu of flowers,

at home. Born in Lower L'Ardoise she was a daughter of the late Domanic
and Sabine (Sampson) Mombourquette. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs.
Helena Landry. Lower L'Ardoise; Theresa, (Mrs. Herman Mombourquette),
Port Hawkesbury; four sons, George and Richard, both of Lower L'Adoise;
Albert and Wilfred, Halifax; 18 grandchildren; 15 Great-Grandchildren;
one sister Mrs. Angeline Peters, West L'Ardoise. She was predeceased by
her husband Banjamin; one daughter Mary; one son Joseph; two
grandchildren. The body is at her home in Lower L'Ardoise. Funeral will
be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Holy Guardian Angels Church, Lower

suddenly at home Saturday. Born in L'Ardoise, he was a son of the late
Joseph B. and Elizabeth (Landry) Briand. He was a fisherman and a
carpenter. Surviving are his wife, the former Esther Doiron; two sons,
John Jr. and Lionel, both of Halifax; a daughter Sarah Ann (Mrs. Donald
Scott, Halifax; two brothers, Francis, L'Ardoise; Peter, MacKenzie,
B.C.; four sisters, Beatrice (Mrs. Anthony Landry), River Bourgeois'
Alma (Mrs. Urban Sampson), L'Ardoise; Effie (Mrs. Edgar Lanteigne),
Agnes (Mrs. Paul Proulx), both of Montreal; six grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother. The body is
a L'Ardoise Funeral Home. Funeral will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Church
of the Holy Guardian Angel, L'Ardoise.

Rev. A. Briand - Antigonish. Rev. Amable Briand, 97, of retired
priest of the Diocese of Antigonish, died on Tuesday evening (November
28th, 1978) at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish. Born
in L'Ardoise, Richmond
County, a son of the late Morris Briand and Mary (Samson) Briand, Father
Briand was the last surviving member of a family of six. He
attended St. Anne's College, Church Point, before entering Holy Heart
Seminary in Halifax. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1911.
Following ordination he served as an assistant in the parishes of Holy
Redeemer, Sydney, St. Anne's, Glace Bay, St. Peter's, Port Hood, St.
Joseph's Bras d'Or, Lawrence, Mulgrave, and as Parish Priest in the
parishes of Immaculate Conception, Main-a-Dieu, Immaculate Conception,
West Arichat, Holy Cross, Pomquet, St. Joseph's, St. Joseph du Moine.
Following retirement as Pastor in St. Jopseh du Moine in 1954, Father
Briand resided at St. Theresa's Convent, Margaree Forks. In 1958
he moved to Antigonish, serving for a time as Assistant Chaplain at St.
Martha's Hospital and then as Chaplain at R.K. MacDonald Guest Home.
Upon reitrement in 1961 he remained for a time at the Guest Home and
them moved to St. Martha's Hospital. Earlier this
month he returned to R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home where he died.
Father Briand is survived by several nieces and nephews. The
remains were transferred to Holy Angles Church, L'Ardoise on Thursday
where a Bible Vigil was held in the evening. Bishop William E.
Power presided at the funeral Mass on Friday. Burial was made in
the parish cemetery.

Theresa Taylor, 60, West L'Ardoise, died Friday November 25, at the
Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in L'Ardoise she was a daughter
of the late Thomas Bonin and Sabin (Sampson) Bonin. She is survived by
her husband, James, Two sons, Gerard and Fred, five grandchildren, one
sister, Hattie Sampson, St. Peter's. The body is resting at the West
L'Ardoise Funeral Parlour. The funeral took place this morning at Holy
Guardian Angel Church with Rev. Basil Boudreau officiating. Interment
took place in parish cemetery.

[Jan 18th] in Richmond Villa. Born in Lower L'Ardoise, he was a son of
the late Samuel and Victoria (Landry) Birrette. He was a retired
fisherman and also worked on the Lady Laurier during the Second World
War. He is survived by a brother, Murdock, Lower L'Ardoise; a sister,
Mrs. Mary Dollmier, Lower L'Ardoise. He was predeceased by a brother,
Albert; a sister, Jane Boudreau. The body is in L'Ardoise Funeral home.

BRIAND, Henery Peter - 76, Gottingen Street, Halifax, died August 6,
1992, at home. Born in L'Ardoise, Richmond County, he was a son of the
late George and Anne Laura (Bonnin) Briand. He served in the Royal Navy
during the Second World War and was employed with the Federal
Government, Willow Park until retirement. He is survived by his
companion, Ruby Orman, Halifax; two sisters, Evelyn (Mrs. Richard
Byrne), Alice (Mrs. Arthur Norman), both of Halifax; brother, George,
Halifax. He was predeceased by five sisters, Freda Hobbs, Ethel Fahey,
Emily Hunt, Muriel Runacres, Anna Horne; two brothers, Elmer, Bernard.
The body is in Snow's Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax, visiting
7-9 p.m. today, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral will be 9 a.m. Monday in
St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower
Sackville.

grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Francis, L'Ardoise;
four sisters, Beatrice

died July 20, 1993, at home. Born in Lower L'Ardoise, he was a son of
the late Benjamine and Virginia (Mombourquette) Berrette. He was a
resident of Halifax for 40 years and retired to L'Ardoise 12 years ago.
He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served overseas with
the Manitoba Dragoons. He was a member of the International Bricklayers
Union, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 25, Halifax and Branch 110,
L'Ardoise. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Sampson; a son,
Ronald, Halifax; four daughters, Nancy Mombourquette, L'Ardoise; Wanda
Berrette, Sudbury, Ont.; Doreen Pilon, Timberlea; Paula Sampson, Hatchet
Lake; two sisters, Lena Landry, L'Ardoise; Theresa Mombourquette, Port

October 16, 1993, in Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital, Sheet Harbour.
Born in L'Ardoise, Richmond County, he was a son of the late Wilfred and
Elizabeth (Briand) Briand. He was a seaman all of his working life of 35
years, presently with Socanau Inc. on the ship the L. Rochette. He
sailed with the
cable company on the Lord Calvin from 1957-67 and with Gulf Canada from
1967-86. He is survived by his companion, Erma Hubley; two sons, Terry
Hubley, Sheet Harbour; Michael Hubley, at home; three sisters, Gladys,
Theresa, both of Montreal; Ireen, Glace Bay. He was predeceased by a
son, Ross; brother, Gerald; several brothers and sisters in infancy.
Cremation has taken place. Family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. October
22, 9-11 a.m. October 23 in Crowell's Funeral Home, Sheet Harbour. A
memorial service will be 2 p.m. October 23 in St. Peter's Roman Cath-

Care. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Murdock and Annie
(Mombourquette) Barrett. She and her sister were recognized many times
with letters of commendation for their music which was for those who
enjoyed ragtime, old-fashioned waltzes and sing-alongs. She was the last
surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by two
sisters, Winnie, Lauretta; four infant brothers. Funeral will be 12:15
p.m. today in St. Mary's Basilica, Msgr. O'Driscolll officiating. Burial

resident of Halifax and was a longshoreman for over 40 years. He is
survived by his wife, the former Louise A. Pottie; two daughters,
Mildred (Mrs. Francis J. Sampson), Viola (Mrs. Neil Aucoin), both of
Halifax; son, Wayne, Halifax; two brothers, Clifford, Halifax; Francis,
Ontario; sister, May (Mrs. Nelson Levy), Halifax; seven grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred; two

BRIAND, Arthur James - 64, Oak Park, Shelburne County, died July 8,
1994, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in L'Ardoise, Richmond County,
he was a son of the late Thomas and Odille (Mombourquette) Briand. He
was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Cape

"Willie" - 87, L'Ardoise, died August 7, 1999, in Richmond
Villa, St. Peter's. Born in L'Ardoise, he was a son of the late William
E. and Marcella (MacLean) Briand. He served in the Canadian Army and was
a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 110, L'Ardoise. He was a miner
for many years working in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and was employed
with the Department of Indian Affairs at the Halifax Citadel prior to
retiring to L'Ardoise. Surviving are his wife, Margaret (Carpentier)
Briand; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother,
Duncan; sisters Della, Josephine, Catherine. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m.
today, funeral 10 a.m. Tuesday both in Holy Guardian Angel Church, Rev.

Hospital, Evanston. Born in L'Ardoise in 1922, she was a daughter of the
late Henry Placid and Sophia Alice (Landry) Burke. She was a member of
the Holy Guardian Angels Parish, L'Ardoise. She was a special person who
enjoyed skunking anyone who would challenge her to a game of crib, and
who always thought of others before herself, even during her sickness.
Surviving are sons, Dwight R. and Peg, Calgary, Alta.; Graham G. and
Corinne, Stouffville, Ont.; daughter, Mary (McInnis) Young and Larry,
Sydney; grandchildren, Brook, Joseph Brymer, New Market, Ont.; Kenneth

brothers, Harry James Burke and Eileen, Halifax; George Murdock Burke

June 1, 2000, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, surrounded by
her loving family. Born in Lower L'Ardoise, she was the beloved wife of
the late James Martin Briand, and daughter of the late Peter and Emeline
(Campbell) Clannon. She is survived by five sons and three daughters,
Deacon James (Marian), Upper Sackville; Brother Matthew OSA,
"Joseph", MaryLake, Ont.; Leo, Upper Sackville; Natalie
(Fenton) Milligan, Beaverbank; Elaine (Marvin) Milligan, Sackville; Paul
(Sally), Lower L'Ardoise; Blaise, at home; Anne (Duane) MacKay,
Liverpool; brother, Joe (Kaye) Clannon, Hamilton, Ont.; sister, Theresa
(Joseph) Mombourquette, Burton, N.B.; 20 grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; special niece, Theresa Clements. She was
predeceased by son, Louie; sisters, Bridget Anne, Agnes and Elizabeth;
daughter-in-law, Irene (McGrath) Briand; granddaughter, Melissa Briand.
She was a lifelong member of Holy Guardian Angels Parish in L'Ardoise
and a member of the CWL and the ladies social club for more than 40
years. She was a very caring and loving mother and grandmother and her
strong faith in the Lord was an inspiration to all who knew her. She
will be greatly missed and loved forever. Funeral mass will be held in

honourary grampy to Ashley, D.J., Brandon and Nicholas Doucette.

L'Ardoise, Richmond Co., formerly of Halifax, passed away peacefully
June 14, 2001, in the home he was born in. He moved to Halifax at age
19, where he worked at the Halifax waterfront, Steven's Transport and
then Border Brokers Ltd. until 1977. He returned to Lower L'Ardoise,
working in the fishing industry until he retired. He continued an active
interest in all fishing activities and spent many hours at the wharf
visiting with the fishermen. He is survived by his sisters, Lena Landry,
Point Michaud; Theresa Mombourquette (Herman), Port Hawkesbury;
brothers, George and Wilfred, both of L'Ardoise. He was predeceased by
parents, Benjamin and Virginia (Mombourquette); brothers, Joseph and
Albert; sister, Mary. He has always lived with or near his brother,
Albert and sister-in-law, Mary and their children. Uncle Richard will be
deeply missed by his godchildniece, Nancy Mombourquette (John) and
special grand-niece, Lenore, as well as nephew, Ronald Berrette (Noreen)
and nieces, Wanda Berrette, Doreen Pilon (Kenneth), Paula Sampson
(Darrell). He is also survived by several other nieces, nephews,
grand-nieces and grand-nephews. The body has been cremated. Visitation

Ben" "Poppa" - 86, Lower L'Ardoise, passed away
peacefully May 31, 2002, at home, in the loving company of his family.
Born December 14, 1915, he was a son of the late Benjamin and Virginia (Mombourquette)
Barrett. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas with
the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and the Royal Canadian Artillery
from 1939 to 1945. Georgie was employed with Maritime Builders of Sydney
for 30 years; upon his retirement he continued as a local building
contractor. He was an avid hunter and fisherman with a great love of the
outdoors. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ileana (Ellis);
daughters, Vivian Vogt, Dartmouth; Sandra (Lloyd) Oickle, Dartmouth;
sons, Anthony (Ewa), Dartmouth; Raymond (Claudia), Point Michaud;
grandchildren,Jamie Vogt, Paul (Glenda) Barrett, Dawn (Craig) Humphreys,
Jodi Oickle, Martha and Kellen Barrett; great- grandchildren, Jacob and

"Joe", Lt. (retired) - 80, Lower L'Ardoise, passed away
peacefully Friday, June 28, 2002, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital,
Sydney. He was the beloved son of the late Peter Joseph and Margaret
Birrette (Lower L'Ardoise). He was a decorated veteran of the Second
World War serving with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Europe, retiring
with the rank of lieutenant. He was project engineer for the restoration
of the Fortress of Louisbourg and the Alexander Graham Bell HD4
Hydrofoil. He was a past commodore of Dobson Yacht Club. He was an avid
boater and fisherman. He was a loving father to Kenneth, ,father-in-law
to Margaret and Papa to Katherine. Many thanks to all the wonderful
nurses at Harbour View Veterans Hospital-SM, who took such great care of
Dad in his time of need, Dr. Chinelli and all the nurses at CBRH, CCU
for their dedicated work. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 2, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., funeral
will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, both in Holy Guardian Angels Church,

Upper Sackville, died October 23, 2002, in the VG Site, QEII. He was a
loving husband to his wife, the former Marian O'Hara, for many years,
having celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary October 6, 2002;
daughters, Stephanie Tobin (Craig), Dartmouth; Lydia Hebb (Corey) and
grandson C.J.; sons, Glen (Tricia), Lower Sackville; Peter, Louis
(Deanne), both of Upper Sackville; adopted daughters, Anna Marie Iraci
and Bonnie Briand, both of Ottawa; brothers, Brother Matthew (Joseph),
El Paso, Tex.; Leo, Upper Sackville; Paul (Sally), L'Ardoise; Blaise,
Lower Sackville; sisters, Natalie (Fenton) Milligan, Beaver Bank; Elaine
(Marvin) Milligan, Lower Sackville; Anne (Dwayne) MacKay, Milton; six
grandchildren; in-laws, Orville O'Hara, Margaret Anne Mellor, both of
Ottawa; Gregory and Helen O'Hara, Kempville. He was predeceased by son
in infancy, David; brother, Louie; parents, James and Mary (Clannon)
Briand. Born in L'Ardoise, he worked for the federal government for 37
years beginning in the Supreme Court of Canada, retiring in March of
2000 as Regional Director of Veteran's Affairs, Atlantic Canada. He was
a lifelong member of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Deacon for
23 years and was involved in many other ministries in St. John Vianney
Roman Catholic Church. In August of 2001, he was appointed Pastoral
Administrator of St. Francis of Assisi. He acquired many close friends
through his work as well as his involvement in the community. He was
very involved in family activities and enjoyed coaching his three sons
numerous football and soccer teams, as he was their biggest fan. His
constant support and wisdom will be greatly missed by his wife and
children. He was always there through the years to provide the best
advice and guidance whatever the situation. We will never fill the
emptiness felt in our hearts, we can only hope to honor his memory by
passing on his faith and virtues, which he instilled in us. Visitation
will be 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Friday in St. Francis of Assisi
Roman Catholic Church, Mount Uniacke. Praise and worship music will be
sung from 9:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. with funeral mass 10 a.m. Saturday in

84, Halifax, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, in St. Vincent's Guest House,
Windsor Street, Halifax. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late
Paul Daniel Sampson (L'Ardoise), and Mary Maude Martell (Halifax).
Muriel was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and a
member of St. Michael's Parish for 50 years. She moved from Halifax to
Lower Ship Harbour with daughter and son-in-law in 1998 and then to St.
Vincent's Guest House, October, 2002. Before her children, she worked as
an office clerk for Army Ordinance, DND. She enjoyed traveling with her
husband Harold until his death in 1991. Surviving are daughter, Anne
Marie Boudreau, Lower Ship Harbour; son, Michael Thomas Burns, New
Minas; grandchildren, David and Stephen Boudreau, Matthew and Daniel
Burns; great-granddaughter, Shianne. She was predeceased by her husband,
Harold Thomas Burns; sister, Dorothy M. Tanner; brother, Gerald Sampson.

Birrette occurred on November 19, 2003, in Strait Richmond Hospital,
Evanston. Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Murdock and Catherine
(Peters) Birrette. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoor
sportsman. He is survived by brother, Gerard (Trish), Dartmouth. He was
predeceased by sister, Alma; special uncle, Frank. The body has been

BARRETT, Ileana M. "Nanny" - 78, Lower L'Ardoise, died suddenly Monday, August 16, 2004, in the New Halifax Infirmary, with her loving family nearby. She died as she had lived, with courage and strength. Born in Dartford, Kent, England, to the late Maud (Croft) and Thomas Ellis, Ileana came to Canada in 1946 as a war bride. She worked in the L'Ardoise Co-op and the L'Ardoise Credit Union for a number of years before returning to High School in 1969 to prepare for university. She attended St. Francis Xavier University, where she obtained Bachelor's degrees in Arts and Education in order to pursue a career in teaching. She returned to L'Ardoise in 1975 to teach at the L'Ardoise Consolidated School, where she touched the lives of many young people in the community. After retiring, Nan pursued her love of gardening and creating beautiful art. She was a person of contagious optimism, good humour, enthusiasm and compassion for others and was the heart of her extended family. She is survived by her daughters, Vivian Vogt and Sandra (Lloyd) Oickle, Dartmouth; sons, Anthony (Ewa), Dartmouth; Raymond (Claudia), Point Michaud; grandchildren, Jamie Vogt, Paul (Glenda) Barrett, Dawn (Craig) Humphreys, Jodi Oickle, Martha and Kellen Barrett; great-grandchildren, Emma Vogt, Jacob and Jessica Humphreys, and Kaden Barrett; brother, Reg, Kent, England; sister, Doreen, Kent, England; many nieces, nephews and friends, both here and in England. She was predeceased by her husband, George; son, Billy; sister, Nora; brothers, Tom and Billy. Her remains have been cremated. A memorial service will be held in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L'Ardoise, on Saturday, August 21, at 10 a.m., followed by a private graveside farewell for the family. There will be no visitation by request. A reception for family and friends will take place in the L'Ardoise Community Centre after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Arthritis Society of Nova Scotia or Canadian Cancer Society. BARRON, Sister Mary "Mary Thecla" - 90,
died in Parkstone Enhanced Care on December 2, 2004. Born in L'Ardoise,
Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Irene
(Perry) Barron. She entered the Sisters of Charity in Halifax in 1931
and made her Religious Profession in 1934. Sister taught school for 18
years in New York, British Columbia and Nova Scotia. In addition to
teaching school, she was involved in the community in teaching adults
and was a housekeeper in several parish houses throughout Nova Scotia.
She is survived by sisters, Leota (Lionel) Cormier, Quebec; Frances
(Reginald) Shortall, Halifax; Sara Barron, Halifax; as well as several
nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Florence, Bernadette
Buchar and Gertrude Smith. The body will be in Mount Saint Vincent
Motherhouse, with visitation Sunday, December 5, from 3-8 p.m. Mass of
Christian Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Mount Saint Vincent
Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower
Sackville.

BRIAND, John Felix "Fillie" - 92, L'Ardoise, died peacefully
in Strait Richmond Hospital on February 16, 2005, his loving wife of 66
years, Kathleen (Riley) by his side. Born in L'Ardoise, he was a son of
the late Henry Briand and Victoria Digout. He served in the armed forces
for a brief time. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch
110. He was a carpenter by profession. He is survived by six sons and
five daughters, 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was
predeceased by brother, Fabie and twin brother, Albert. Cremation has
taken place. Mass and burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February

BRIAND (Riley), Kathleen Lillian - 84, L'Ardoise, died peacefully on
December 2, 2006, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. She was a kind
and generous person. Born in Halifax on November 26, 1922, she was a
daughter of the late George and Rita Briand Riley. She is survived by
children, George (Gail), Robert (Eileen), Anne (Vince), Bernadette
(Calvin), Diane (George), Philip, Donald (Margeritte), Xavier (Cathie),
Bernard (Lorna), Denise (John) Wanda (Tony). She is also survived by 22
grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She
was predeceased by husband John Felix; several brothers and sisters.

BERTHIER, Clifford Abraham - 76, L'Ardoise, passed away peacefully on
January 9, 2007, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, with his family
by his side, who gave him tremendous support, care and love during his
courageous battle with cancer. He was a quiet and gentle man, and will
be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. He had been associated
with numerous charitable and religious organizations, and received many
certificates of appreciation for his care and generosity. Born in
L'Ardoise, he was a son of the late Frank and Selina (Mombourquette)
Berthier. He is survived by brothers, Alfred (Mary) and Roy, both of
L'Ardoise; sisters, Vina (Richard), Halifax; Lena (Joe) Gerrior,
Halifax; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers,
William, Charlie; sisters, Bertha Crewe (L'Ardoise), Irene Ernst (Tantallon);
infant sister, Irene. The family would like to thank all those who have
helped in many ways over the past couple of years, the Cape Breton
Regional Hospital and Cape Breton Cancer Centre, and its excellent team

BRIAND, Marguerite Marie-Jeanne - 87, of L'Ardoise, passed away
peacefully Friday, July 27, 2007, in Strait Richmond Hospital with her
nieces by her side. Born in Chicoutimi, Que., she was a daughter of the
late Phillyie and Victoria Carpentier. She is survived by her sisters,
Georgette Deveaux and Marie-Paul Pottie; 23 nieces and nephews and many
great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Willie;
sisters, Lucienne and Yvonne, and brothers, Henry and Nazaire.
Marguerite was known for her love of gardening and crafts, especially
knitting and crocheting and a great devotion to Ste. Anne. A special
thank you to doctors and staff of St. Martha's Hospital, doctors and
staff of Strait Richmond Hospital and a very special thank you to Dr.
Tan. Visitation will be held in Holy Guardian Angels Funeral Home on

13, 2008, at home in L'Ardoise with his loving family by his side. Born
on July 28, 1928, in L'Ardoise, he was a son of the late John T. Bona
and Mary Beatrice (Landry). He was a Member of the Holy Guardian Angels
Church, L'Ardoise. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sophie
