The Martel Family
of
L'Ardoise, Cape Breton

The Martel family in Canada can trace their roots to Honore Martel, son of Jean Martel (b.1601) and Barbe Duschesne. Honore had arrived in Quebec on September 30, 1665 as a soldier of Alexandre Berthier company of the L'Allier regiment and married Marguerite L'Amirault on November 26th 1668 in Notre Dame de Quebec. He elected to stay in Canada and became a farmer.

Honore and Marguerite's son, Jean-Francois married Marie-Madeleine Vanier. Their son, Jean-Baptiste moved from Quebec to Nova Scotia and married Marie-Joseph Poujet. They had five children in the present day L’Ardoise/St. Peter's area between 1734 and 1744. He became a coaster and a farmer. The following 1752 census completed by Sieur Joseph de la Roque accounts for his family.
