The Landry Families
of
L'Ardoise, Cape Breton

The Landry family in Cape Breton descends through 2 distinct branches of the family tree. The River Bourgeois Landrys descend from Pierre Landry. He was deported to France. Lists of 1761 and 1762 show Pierre at LaRochelle, France. By this time he had married Anne Clerge, daughter of Claude Clerge and Francoise Lavergne. Anne had been at Port Toulouse, Ile Royale, about 1742. 

It is interesting to note, this branch of the Landrys who came to Cape Breton, came voluntarily, and came before the deportations took place.

The Landrys who settled in L'Ardoise descend from both these branches to the family. Michael Landry who married Elizabeth/Isabella Marchand is a descendant of the Isle Madame Landry family. His grandfather was Alexis Landry who married Marguerite Aucoin. Most of the L'Ardoise Landrys can trace their roots through this branch of the family.

The second branch of the L'Ardoise Landry family descends through Pierre Landry and Anne Clerge. This line of the family is the one most of the River Bourgeois Landrys, including myself, can trace their roots through. Their grandson, Pierre Landry who married Susanne Mombourquette, had ties to the River Bourgeois and L'Ardoise areas. Several of their descendants settled in the L'Ardoise area.

Their is another line of Landrys from the L'Ardoise area which descends through William/Guillaume Landry who married Lea Prisque Mombourquette. They were married in L'Ardoise on January 13, 1873. The church records record his parents as unknown. This end of the family tree seems to have moved from the area as I have not been able to trace the family much past 1900. William Landry and Lee Mombourquette had only 2 known male children and I have not been able to find any descendants through these sons.

Based upon the 1871 and 1881 census returns, William Landry (b. abt. 1850)  is most likely the son of Joseph Landry and Sabine Martel who married on May 21, 1855 in L'Ardoise; placing him with the descendants of Michael Landry and Elizabeth Marchand. This would explain why his parents are recorded as unknown in the marriage record, as he was born before their marriage. In 1871, Joseph and Sabine (Dwelling 178/ Family 182) are recorded with an unmarried male, William, aged 20, living with them. In 1881, William and his wife Leuoies (Louise, aka Lee Mombourquette) and their children (Sabine 7, Mary 4, and Philomene 1) were living next door to Joseph and Sabine. There is a birth record for a 'Guillaume Amedée Unknown' in the L'Ardoise records. This may be the birth of the William Landry in question.       Unknown, Guillaume Amedée born: Feb. 24, 1850    baptised: Mar 31, 1850  Parents In Common  godparents: Jules Labille & Alexandrine Labille
